Whale and Dolphin Watching in Costa Rica
by admin ·
Costa Rica ’s oceanic waters are blessed with an abundant biodeversity which includes several species of dolphins and whales. As of 1953 whale watching and dolphin watching in Costa Rica became a sustainable tourist service which had been gradually evolving to one of the most eco-friendly and intense nature apreciation tours in the country.
The species of dolphins that can be found in Costa Rica waters are Spotted, Spinner, Bottlenose, Common and Orcas. The species of whales that migrate to or live in Costa Rican waters are: False Killer, Pilot, Beaked and Humpback whales. Whale watching in Costa Rica is a very interesting tour because Costa Rica has one of the largest Humpback whale reproductive seasons and receives specimens from both the southern and northern hemispheres.
The best place for whale watching in Costa Rica would be the central and south pacific, specially the areas around Uvita, Dominical and the Osa Peninsula like Drake Bay and Caño Island. Throughout all these places you’ll finde pods of humbacks, orcas, pilots and more surfacing for air and sometimes even staying as to investigate the humans that are themselves watching the whales. In the midst of it all there are also legions of dolphins found all over the marine enviroment, sometimes traveling in pods that number in the hundreds.
