Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica

by admin ·

The wildlife refuge Barra del Colorado is located in north-east of Costa Rica, bordering with Nicaragua and the Tortuguero National Park and bordering the river San Juan. It has an area of 92,000 hectares and is located at a distance of 99 kilometers from San Jose by plane.

The two sides of the river are strikingly different. The side of Nicaragua is covered with dense primary forest, while the side of Costa Rica long ago succumbed under the logging companies and has given way to flat plains that become flooded during the rainy season.

The wildlife here is very diverse; there are large populations of monkeys and birds through the park, as well as some unusual amphibian that abound on the banks of the rivers, especially toads and frogs.

If you go to Barra del Colorado you need to take the opportunity to explore beautiful areas of nature for several days without interruption, whether you are an experienced explorer or not, there are guides that will help you, there is sufficient field and many of the parts of the reservation remain unexplored.

A peculiar and interesting phenomenon in the San Juan River is the migration of the bull sharks; they swim from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Nicaragua. It is not known with certainty why this situation occurs, or how the animals adapt to the change in salinity of the water passing by.
