Freshwater fishing in Costa Rica

by admin ·

Sport fishing in the rivers of Costa Rica is well developed and it is offered by 5-star hotels with all the comforts, as well as small lodges next to beautiful rivers that are full of fishes ready to give you a very interesting experience as a fisherman. In Costa Rica the rivers that flow down the mountains are full of trout. Lake Arenal is also a great place for fishing so you must visit it if you go to this country.
Costa Rica is home to a large number of glorious inland lakes, miles of rivers and two coasts in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This is surely a delight for anglers, and this small country has one of the finest and most diverse fisheries in the world. Given the fact that Costa Rica has a small area of ground you can access easily the rivers of the two coasts from the capital San Jose that is just a 30 minute flight to the Pacific beach or Caribbean coast. The inland fishing can be accomplished through a journey of about three to four hour trip by car from the capital. There are many shelters that are dedicated to house serious sport fishermen and offering programs in packages. Many of them use first-class boats and guides that are very experienced.

In the Caribbean side the freshwater fishing is somewhat different from the Pacific. Here the fishermen drop their bait in the estuaries of rivers, lakes and large rivers that run within the continent from Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado, the two centers of sport fishing in the area. The kind of fish most prized by fishermen is the Tarpon, known as the “silver bullet”, this fish can weigh up to 68 Kg (150 lbs). Not surprisingly, Costa Rica is the preferred place for global fisheries of this fish that is known for fighting like no other. Also popular are the big “snook” level trophy, a fish smaller but very aggressive that can weigh up to 14 kg (30 lbs). The Colorado River is a navigable river, whose basin, abundant in natural beauty, is protected by the National Wildlife Refuge Barra del Colorado. This river is famous internationally because in their waters you can practice the sport fishing of Tarpon and other species of fish like Robalos and Scads. The river Parismina for its part has a great reputation, due to the rich fishing that have in their waters. There is several fishing lodges that offer everything required to practice sport fishing in this area which is adjacent to the north with the southern boundary of the Tortuguero National Park. For this reason, the pier located in a point known as Cano Blanco is the point of origin of many trips to this national park.

All the tours advertised by travel agents in Costa Rica always include boat, captain (most of the times mate too), fishing gear, tackle, lures/bait, refreshments (water, juice, soda, beer) and snacks like sandwiches, fruits and salads. Offshore fishing charter boats in Costa Rica always include a good electronics package featuring at least GPS, depth finder, vhf communication and safety equipment.  The boats used for this type of fishing in Costa Rica are anywhere from 29 to 60+ feet. Inshore fishing in Costa Rica feature smaller boats but they are very well prepared as well, only chartering to species other than billfish.

There are also many great spots for kayak fishing in Costa Rica. This is a growing adventure tour that has turned out to be very productive and eco-friendly. Kayak fishing in Costa Rica can be done on estuary and inshore waters around the country and because of it’s stealth, this transportation method combined with fishing skills and the knowledge of the guides has turned out some great fish for those lucky anglers adventurous enough to “cast” the challenge.
